Archipelago of Artistic Practices Kunsthal Gent_9-11 december 20241115

Outline: The program will be dedicated to familiarizing ourselves and a group of invited guests with the digital interface Eavatea. Time will be devided between uploading and feedback sessions, as well as planning and preparing the next chapters of the Archipelago program, in Ghent and Antwerp.

Preparation : All participants should consider elements of his/her own practice for discussing/uploading on Eavatea. The upload methods have been very much simplified. Goal of the sessions is to explore the maximum reach of the tools artistic potential. People of AC will not be joining. They were briefed beforehand to already work on some apparent glitches so our three-day workshop could run as smooth as possible.

Location: Workshops will be in the Kunsthal Chapel. We will stay over two nights – in Kunsthal Residency app / Skyline app.

Employment: All Jubilee participants will be offered 3 days employment, either through a Kunsthal labor contract, or, for those who work as freelancers, as an invoice to Jubilee. Those already under contract will save up the amount for other days. Those who cannot be employed will have a Jubilee savings account for future use (ex. publication cost etc). We will invite two guests for that conversation, both involvd with a river, the SZenne and the Sambre respectively: Maria Lucia Cruz Correia and Vincent Meessen (speaking for Olivier Pestiaux, who is in China). Two of us will join the conversation that will be live-streamed.

Natural Contract Lab – Maria Lucia Cruz Correia NCL is a transdisciplinary artistic practice that aims at creating an active and sustained dialogue with bodies of water under deep ecological transformation. The artistic interventions are hybrid and unfold differently in respect to each river as dialogue, a collaboration with, and a gesture of care. With the aim to fabulate new forms of justice, Natural Contract Lab has co-created an artistic Protocol of Reciprocal Care weaving the practices of restorative justice, rights of rivers, environmental grief, sensory ecoscenography and water ancestry. NCL is a body of care that invites others for moments of walking-with the river, restorative justice water circles, participatory gestures of care, river Agora's, water grief circles, river guardians Schools and other actions that emerge in collaboration with the fish, people, plants and other riverene beings.

Towards legal recognition of the Sambre River: Vincent Meessen / Olivier Pestiaux Climate disruption, collapse of biodiversity, animal abuse, pollution... More and more voices are being raised to demand recognition of the rights of Nature, to better protect living things – forests, rivers and glaciers – and allow them to defend themselves in court. Why should legal personality be reserved only for humans and businesses? Without waiting for the revolution that such recognition requires, judges in many countries are already not hesitating to invoke the urgency of changing the paradigm, of enacting a natural contract.

Tuesday 10/12

Das Arts feedback session: Kunsthal: 10.30 – 12.30h

Jubilee we recently experimented with the Dasarts Feedback Method which allows for a layered deconstruction of a project or proposal. The one-hour feedback session follows a very strict method in which a maker presents a work in development. A group of participants gives feedback, except for one person who assumes the role of coordinator. One other participant has the responsibility of taking notes. After a 15' presentation of the proposal by the maker, feedback comments are organised in 4 rounds of 10' each, each round making a full circle of all participants.

In the Affirmative Round participants can express what worked well in the proposal. Next is the I Need Round in which participants assume a fictitious identity and express what they would need to improve the project from the perspective of this fictitious person. For example as a lawyer I would need to know how EavateaCoop would deal with the authorship rights of an uploaded document, or as an art collector I would need to know if it is possible to buy a piece of Eavatea...

Feedback focuses on the project itself. If people speak, they need to be concise and not repeat comments that have been made. They should speak from a third place and comments should be objective and distant. The maker absorbs the diversity of comments, can take notes but cannot respond, until the Open Questions Round. This round brings in the voice of the maker who can respond to the questions. Finally, there is a Post-It Round in which participants write topics on post-it notes that suggest tips to improve the proposal.

Invited guests to give feedback: Ghent-based practicioners Adrienne van der Werf, Tom Van Imschoot, Sarah Kesenne, Nancy Vansieleghem,

Lunch: 12.30 – 14h

Jubilee Monthly meeting: 14-18h

Collaboration with Julie van Elslande: not in March. January possible. Louise sees possibilities to do the March (hackaton) event without Julie, prepare in December through feedback format? We have a list a people in mind to organise.

-> Jesse makes doodle for both December and January (afternoons 14-17h), Leuven. Severine Dusolier, Marie De Clippele, Nancy, Julie Van Elslande, Stephanie Friedel.

Scott will be in Belgium 1-12 November. He is invited by UFO (an organisation regrouping collective run artist spaces in Brussels) between 6-12 november. Organise Live Conversation #2 then, about a countermapping of collective workspaces? What kind of mapping would be interesting for local artist-run networks? -> Jesse checks in with Loes.

Also December Live Conversation #3. Perhaps about Zenne river mapping traject (project coordinated by Natural Contract Lab). Possibility to combine this with an invitation to group that works around personification of Sambre (contact of Vincent).
